We must recognize we are engaged in cultural war

November 18, 2015

We are all horrified by the terrible violence committed in Paris the evening of Nov. 13. We should be praying for the victims and their families and for the people of France who suffered this evil action. Candles and flowers were placed outside the Le Carillon café in tribute to those killed in ...

Embracing multi-racial America

March 20, 2015

Anniversaries are special times. We remember the past and tell the stories that have shaped our lives. We celebrate old victories and renew long-standing relationships. We ask hard questions about why things happened and discuss what might have been. We also think about our values and envision a ...

Voting as a Christian Duty

October 27, 2014

All Christians have a duty to vote in their city, state and national elections. If you are an American citizen, you should vote on Tuesday, November 4 (if not before). When Jesus was asked, “Which commandment in the law is the greatest?” he answered, “'You shall love the Lord your God with all your ...

September 13, 2014

Bearing with one another in love Webcast video recording, including Q and A. I love The United Methodist Church. One of my friends tells me that I am a genetic Methodist — it is in my DNA. But I have spent many years studying our history, our doctrine and our polity, and I truly believe that if I ...

Lessons from Zimbabwe

August 18, 2014

We have much to learn from the Zimbabwe Episcopal Area. These lessons are part of the gift they offer us in our Chabadza partnership. I am writing this from Zimbabwe, immediately upon the ending of the Ebenezer Convention. They frequently quoted 1 Samuel 7:12 “Thus far the LORD has helped us.” I ...

Deepening Christmas

December 11, 2013

Christmas should be one of the deepest and most meaningful times of the year. It is the celebration of God’s ultimate, self-giving intervention into human history. While there are many songs that express the joy and wonder of this incredible event, my mind keeps going back to an unlikely hymn: Let ...

Transforming the world

November 13, 2013

Christians know that God hates sin. God has condemned murder, lying, stealing, adultery, greed, sexual immorality, blasphemy and worshipping false gods. When an individual comes to having faith in Christ, God’s grace actively seeks to help that person grow toward “the holiness without which no one ...

The Wesleyan way

October 02, 2013

Most United Methodists need a spiritual revival! If that is true of you or your church, what does revival look like, and how do you prepare for it? Revival is always by the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit. So, prayer becomes an important practice in seeking to find that new life that ...

Deciding where to serve

July 02, 2013

One of the great blessings of Annual Conference is the opportunity to see all the many things that God is doing through The United Methodist Church in our state and around the world. We not only hear about vital congregations and how they are doing innovative ministry in various ways, but we hear ...

Deepening spiritual disciplines through devotions

May 02, 2013

I have a deep sympathy with individuals who find it hard to practice spiritual disciplines. For many years, I could not find the right pattern for regular prayer and Bible Study. Like many pastors, I studied the scriptures for professional reasons: preparing sermons, leading Bible study and teaching...

Welcoming Strangers

January 01, 2013

Hebrews 13:2 is clear: “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.” This verse—along with Leviticus 19:33-34 and Matthew 25:38-40—are the bedrock that should inform our hearts and minds about how our churches, our communities, ...

Why we must continue to Imagine No Malaria

December 12, 2012

The following was written Dec. 12, 2012, in Chimanimani, Zimbabwe. I have been to the meetings. I have read the brochures. I have watched the videos. I have heard impassioned speakers talk about the scourge of this disease. Intellectually I knew what I needed to know. I have been part of the Kansas ...

Being witnesses for Christ

October 16, 2012

One way to describe the Christian’s life of discipleship is to take seriously Jesus’s words to his disciples in Acts 1:8. He said, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” ...

More Young People

October 15, 2012

Dr. Lovett Weems has taught many leaders of The United Methodist Church a phrase that is being repeated widely: we need more people, more young people, and more diverse people. I agree. The average age of a United Methodist layperson is more than 57. The average age of people in the United States is...

One conference and change

August 14, 2012

We have voted for change. When I say “we,” I mean more than two-thirds of the lay and clergy members of all three conferences: Kansas East, Kansas West and Nebraska. On January 1, 2014, we will become the Great Plains Annual Conference. I do believe that we have made the right decision, but, as one ...
