Ogden, Kansas, is located eight miles west of Manhattan, at the gates of the Fort Riley military post. This town of just over 2,000 is home to many poverty-level families, several of whom are disabled or single parents. Ogden is a very transient community, and has the highest rate of poverty in Riley County. Three-fourths of the local children are on free or reduced lunch at school. With limited employment options and limited public transportation options, many struggle to find work to improve their economic status.
What They Do:
The Ogden Friendship House of Hope, located at 226 Riley Ave., is dedicated to helping those in need. For more than 30 years, this United Methodist ministry has been helping the at-risk community of Ogden by providing a food pantry and emergency financial aid. The House of Hope features a thrift store that is open to the public. All the proceeds are used to assist persons in need.
