Zimbabwe 14 - No. 2

8/13/2014

Patience Romans 8:24-30 "For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance...

Zimbabwe 14 - No. 1

8/12/2014

Fourteen Great Plains United Methodists head out for Zimbabwe today to experience church renewal in this vibrant African country. Be in Readiness Luke 12:35-38 “Be dressed in readiness, and keep your lamps lit. Be like men who are waiting for their master when he returns from the wedding feast, so that they may immediately open the door to him when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those slaves whom the master will find on the alert when he comes; truly I say to you, that he will gird himself to ...

On the road reflections

Due to my visa delay, I had the opportunity to drive south to Lincoln, Nebraska, the city where I attended college. This trip was originally on my post-Philippines to do list but was cut due to timing. While it would have been beneficial to be in China by now, I could not be more grateful for the extra time. This blog is based on what I call ‘car journaling.’ While driving long distances, I spend a lot of time processing and often long to write these thoughts. Since I cannot write and drive ...

The necessity of two-way mission partnerships

8/11/2014

(With this post, Bishop Jones is beginning a weekly blog which should appear most Mondays.)   I leave today for Zimbabwe where I will participate in the Ebenezer Convention Aug.15-17. Please pray that the power of the Holy Spirit will be felt by all of the people gathered there! It should be a great time together. My presence as one of the speakers and the presence of our team from the Great Plains Conference is part of the Chabadza partnership we have with the Zimbabwe East and West ...

Day by day

Many of you may be wondering where I am- am I still in the U.S? In transit to China? Or already in China? While Amity’s goal was for me to depart like…today, that is clearly not the case. :) Due to complications in obtaining work visas, it was decided that attaining a tourist visa to China would be permissible to get me there, then once in China, it would be easier to get a work visa. Therefore, the past few days have been a whirlwind of emails, online applications, and endless questions- but ...

Taken, blessed, broken, given

With feet back on U.S. soil, I am overcome with emotion, overcome by the power of God, and overcome by reality. How do I put the last month into words? How do I convey the sense of comfort and family that was created between the 42 of us? How do I merge this experience with reality? I could write for pages on the various sessions we covered- everything from conflict management and relationship building to Wesley 101 and itineration. I could speak endlessly about each of the 42 Fellows and how ...

GYPCLA: United

Participating in the Global Young Peoples Convocation and Legislative Assembly (GYPCLA) took a spirit of adaption and patience. I did not envy the planning team in moving 400 people to a new location and organizing the logistics for worship, sessions, and meals on the spot. The main purpose of GYPCLA is to discuss and vote on legislation that will later be taken to General Conference. The decisions made are taken to be a representation of the young adult voice of the United Methodist Church. As...

Meeting Glenda

Maria Niechwiadowicz

7/21/2014

On July 16th, typhoon Glenda touched the lives of our family at CCT in Tagaytay. In the early morning hours many of us were abruptly awakened by torrential rain, howling winds, and flooding. Some friends exited their rooms merely seconds before the roof was peeled away! Congregated in our respective rooming facilities my heart stayed somewhat calm as we sang together in prayer. Finally we were notified that we were in the eye of the storm. We were instructed to quickly evacuate to the main ...

With a week under our belt, already there is a unified bond among the 2014 class of Global Mission Fellows! I have enjoyed waking each morning to a tropical cotton candy sunrise! :) Our days have been packed with devotions, sessions on everything from values to logistics, and bonding with groups based on our regional placements in the world. This schedule leaves me exhausted at 8pm, but as many of you know, I have no problem going to bed early! This week, we will be joined by hundreds of fellow...
