Zimbabwe 14 - No. 8

8/18/2014

Monday started early with the group meeting at 8 a.m., near a hotel to get organized for the trip to Mutare.   Final destinations varied with Richard Lewis heading for Nyanga (Chabadza partner with Norwich, Kansas UMC), Kip Ryherd heading to Chipinge (Chabadza partner with Minneola, Kansas UMC), and others I have yet to learn. I wasn't sure where I would end up, however, I ended up going on a trip to African University late in the day which precluded my going to Chipinge to visit a partnership ...

The Zimbabwe Area communicators extended warm hospitality to me and I felt like an honorary member. I edited a few stories, they downloaded many of my photos, I gave away all my extra flash drives and in return they shared many photos and even asked my opinion on a number of communication topics. I felt blessed to be among this group of bright and mostly young professionals and volunteers. Many of the communicators were representing their district on a volunteer basis. Hmmm ... I think it's a ...

"You don't respect me you don't know who I am," said Mrs. Miriam Mackenzie (at right), a noted evangelist from Zimbabwe.   In short, she exhorted Ebenezer Convention attendees to live an upright life, to model Christian living in order to live without sin. She said a life of Christian practice and prayer will bring about a Christian world where children are respectful and adults show leadership in the Spirit of God. Mackenzie was slated to preach from 1-2:30 a.m., Sunday. She concluded around ...

Ebenezer 1 Samuel 7:12 "Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, 'Thus far has the LORD helped us.'"   Friday began the Zimbabwe East and West conferences joint Ebenezer Convention.   Mrs. Nyemba described it as the fruition of a vision of Bishop Nhiwatiwa to bring everybody together to praise God. A processional of each district and their clergy began the day.   Among those preaching included Nhiwatiwa, District Superintendent V. Mutezo, ...

Give thanks Psalm 107:1 "Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever." A little belated due to lack of wifi and iPhone SIM card issues (mostly operator error in a total mobile society). And there's well ... time. It's been busy.   Thursday was to be a day of rest. Once my host family picked me up we ate a light meal and then I suggested I take a short nap (thinking 20-30 minutes), two hours later I wake and it's mid-afternoon.   My host family Chipangidzo and William ...

Forbearance Romans 3:25 ... it was in God's "divine forbearance he had passed over former sins." In simple terms forbearance differs from forgiveness in that it means "I'll give you more time." The long trip and our relationships on this trip will no doubt call up a need for forbearance. We pray for that forbearance for all as we learn about each other's cultures, make a few mistakes and ask for pardon and grace. The long flight Linda Louderback and I amusingly called it the lost day, and ...

Patience Romans 8:24-30 "For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance...

Fourteen Great Plains United Methodists head out for Zimbabwe today to experience church renewal in this vibrant African country. Be in Readiness Luke 12:35-38 “Be dressed in readiness, and keep your lamps lit. Be like men who are waiting for their master when he returns from the wedding feast, so that they may immediately open the door to him when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those slaves whom the master will find on the alert when he comes; truly I say to you, that he will gird himself to ...

The necessity of two-way mission partnerships

8/11/2014

(With this post, Bishop Jones is beginning a weekly blog which should appear most Mondays.)   I leave today for Zimbabwe where I will participate in the Ebenezer Convention Aug.15-17. Please pray that the power of the Holy Spirit will be felt by all of the people gathered there! It should be a great time together. My presence as one of the speakers and the presence of our team from the Great Plains Conference is part of the Chabadza partnership we have with the Zimbabwe East and West ...

Traveling home

2/18/2014

We rose before 6 a.m., and following breakfast said our goodbyes to our cooks Tina, Gladys and Falza. Mrs. Thomas came by as well to wish us safe journies. Bishop Johnwesley Yohanna let us use his truck and his driver for our road trip from Jalingo to Yola to catch the first leg of our flight. Benji accompanied us and we arrived in Yola about 9:30 a.m., to learn that our 11 a.m. flight was moved to 1 p.m. It's only an hour and half flight to Abuju. Pastor Matthew Dangombe met us again and helped...
