York has been a somewhat challenged community, but there has been a push for positive things in areas of civic improvement. There is a small private college in York. Epworth Village has been located in York since the 1800s. It is the location for a women's prison. The school system is healthy. There is a higher poverty rate in York than other Nebraska towns. It is located in a prime area of the state, on interstate 80 and highway 81. Over the past years the church has lost key members and attendance has declined. It presently is about 200. The present pastor has served 16 years and has done well. The past couple of years has been a challenge for the pastor and the congregation. The present view is that an incoming pastor with good energy could make a difference. The church has high respect within the community and has been a leader in areas of community witness and service. There has been a good blend of age groups, but a key to the future will have to be younger families and strong discipleship ministries. The congregation helped with a great remodel project for fellowship and dining. There have been technological improvements. At present there is a $1.3 million dollar debt that is current and progressing toward getting paid off.
