Director of adult discipleship position open at Wichita First UMC

Principal Focus: The director of adult discipleship will focus on helping adults find a spiritual home at First Church. This will include study of the areas surrounding the church, building of relationships with those outside the church, and initiating new ministries that create connections and community for new populations. The director will also form and support short term study/educational opportunities and resource existing adult Sunday School classes with curriculum and support as needed.

Regular Duties:

Study downtown demographics and culture to understand those who live nearby and their spiritual needs.
Attend downtown events and spaces to meet new people and act as an ambassador for First Church, this includes meeting, greeting and representing the church positively.
Organize participation for First Church in downtown events as appropriate.
Develop relationships with people outside the church to discover new ministry opportunities.
Invite new people to First Church’s existing ministries and worship life.
Create new programming opportunities for adults within First Church.
Set benchmarks for new programming and regularly evaluate effectiveness of such programs.
Help educate existing congregation about our downtown context.
Recruit volunteers from existing congregation to help support new ministries.

Solid interpersonal relationship skills
Ability to connect people with one another and form community
Ability to manage people and resources
Ability to follow and administer financial and administrative policies of the church
Ability to motivate and engage congregation members in ministry
Willingness to support the United Methodist Church, its connectional system, and mission
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work as part of a staff team
Flexible, innovative, bold
College degree preferred
Experience in local church ministry preferred
Familiarity with downtown Wichita preferred
