Wichita Aldersgate UMC accepting applications for a director of youth ministries


Primary Function
The director of youth ministries will be responsible for the spiritual oversight and development of youth members (grades 6 - 12) at both Aldersgate and Aldersgate Renew UMC campuses. To this end, the director shall develop and oversee a comprehensive youth program to engage and equip Aldersgate's youth to grow in faith, participate fully in the life of the Church, and to become disciples of Jesus Christ.

This comprehensive program shall be based on the understanding of the primary task of youth ministry to:

  • Love youth where they are
  • Encourage youth in developing their relationship to God
  • Provide them with opportunities for nurture and growth
  • Challenge them to respond to God's call to serve in their communities and world
  • Center activities around the five biblical purposes for youth ministry: worship, ministry, evangelism, fellowship, and discipleship.
  • Help plan, develop, and implement all aspects of a balanced youth ministry in the areas of group building, worship, discipleship, mission, and outreach
  • Make yourself available to youth in a variety of ways (i.e. lunch at school, attendance at extracurricular activities, visitation, times of crisis, etc.)
  • Ensure that the Safe Gatherings training and policy is observed in all youth ministry
  • Mentor youth in developing their leadership
  • Be aware of resources for developing the youth ministry programming and participate in continuing education events and training
  • Recruit, train, and manage volunteers who work with youth to ensure adequate volunteer support and adult to youth ratio
  • Coordinate Sunday school curriculum for youth (grades 6-12) and recruit teachers
  • Coordinate and teach Confirmation classes in partnership with the pastor(s) and provide leadership for confirmands, mentors, and parents beyond the classroom
  • Work to effectively reach youth in the community and develop a strategic youth ministry outreach
  • Plan and implement seasonal and special events for the youth
  • Attend youth-related meetings of the church
  • Keep records of youth participation and manage the youth ministry budget
  • Maintain visibility and familiarity at both campuses
  • Perform other duties as may be required
Qualifications and Aptitudes
The successful candidate will have the following attributes and qualifications:
  • A professed faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior
  • A call and passion for working with and mentoring youth
  • A Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree
  • A valid drivers license (willing to obtain a CDL)
  • Preferably a background or experience in leading groups of youth
  • A vision and a demonstrated ability to plan, develop, coordinate, manage and implement a youth ministry within the parameters of the United Methodist Church
  • Prefer theology to be well-defined/differentiated
  • A moderate who can relate to persons on all sides of the theological spectrum
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, conflict management skills, and computer skills
  • A proven ability to work effectively with youth, diverse individuals, supervisors, and teams of volunteers.
Preference will be given to United Methodist candidates with a strong understanding and affirmation of our theology, tradition, and practices such as Safe Gatherings and our deep commitment to evangelism and missions. Working with youth is a sacred privilege. Therefore, candidate must have a clean criminal record, must refrain from using alcohol, tobacco, or illicit drugs, and must agree to submit to appropriate background and reference checks (KBI or similar type).
