Today's Lectionary Text

1 Timothy 6:11-12

But as for you, man of God, shun all this; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Today's Devotional

1Timothy says in v6.12, “Compete well for the faith and lay hold of that eternal life you were called for and made your good confession for in the presence of many witnesses.” [NET Bible, 2005]

My mother heard a call on my life six months before I was born in 1966. Thirty-three years later, as I was headed to seminary, she told me to read 2Timothy 3.14-4.8 as the passage given to her, for me, before I was born! Verse 4.7 says, “I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith.” [NET Bible, 2005]

I left for seminary in August 1999, and in September I got a letter from the Sidney United Methodist Church informing me they had established a “Timothy Fund” to help fund seminarians seeking full ordination. The church considered themselves to be “Paul,” sending support and encouragement to a new, young preacher, and I was their first “Timothy!”

My current appointment as an elder in the United Methodist Church is in Sidney, Nebraska. Coincidence? Absolutely not! God had a call on my life, and through people and events, God has led me down a pre-planned path. So far, so good! I can hardly wait to see where this path is gonna take me, but I know in the end, with God’s help, I will truly say, “I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith.”

Do you know God has a call on your life as well? He does, you know! Just ask … !

Prayer for Reflection

Loving God, as the Psalmist said about you in 16.11, “You lead me in the path of life!”  Thank you for your awesome presence in my life!  AMEN!
