Today's Lectionary TextMark 4:35-41That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!”Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” ![]() Today's Devotional
After a day teaching to the multitudes at the edge of the Sea of Galilee, Jesus said to His disciples, “Let us cross over to the other side.” The scripture also mentions that there were other little boats with Him. This quiet trip ended up in a terrible windstorm that threaten the lives of all aboard. The disciples were afraid and woke up Jesus, who was asleep in the front of the boat, seeking His help. They asked Jesus, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” Jesus rebuked the wind and immediately a great calm settle on the water. Then He turned to His disciples and said, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” This was a valuable lesson in faith that Jesus was teaching to His disciples. A lesson that the disciples would never forget.
In the past I did not see myself as one of the disciples in the boat with Jesus, but who was in one of the other little boats close to Him. Desiring to be a part of God’s plan, but only from a distance. Wanting to know Jesus better but only at a distance. Hoping for his blessings but only from a distance. Yet all of the time I knew that I was on the wrong boat. Today I am serving the Lord in ministry. The journey has its smooth sailings, windy days and some very stormy times. But being close to God allows me to experience His wonderful love and the miracles that only God can bring to our lives. -Brad Zimmerman, DSA,
