Today's Lectionary Text

John 14:1-3

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also.

Today's Devotional

As I am writing this, a friend is waiting at the hospital with her mother who is dying. It’s not what my friend wanted. It’s not what any of us want -- we don’t like letting go. And yet we all come face to face eventually with the loss of loved ones, friends, homes, things that are near and dear to us. The older we get, the more closely we become acquainted with grief.

Some days, I feel that way about what is going on in the church. It feels like another loss to think of the church I love shattering because we can’t seem to get along with those we disagree with.

And yet, Jesus knows our struggles with letting go and promises us that he goes before us to prepare a place for us. I don’t believe that promise applies only to where we are going after we die, but also to where we live. Wherever we are in life, whatever happens to us, Jesus goes before us to prepare a place for us.  When we face losses of any kind, Jesus prepares a place for us. Whatever the church looks like in the aftermath of all the struggles, Jesus will be there with a place for each of us. It may require letting go of things that are near and dear to us. It may require letting go of people who are near and dear to us. Letting go is the hardest part. But once we do, Jesus is there to take our hand and lead us to the place he has prepared.

Prayer for Reflection

Eternal God wrap your loving arms around us as we grieve the losses that inevitably come in life. Whisper in our ears the promise that you will never leave us and have prepared a place just for us. Amen.
