Today's Lectionary TextPsalm 20The Lord answer you in the day of trouble! May he grant you your heart’s desire, Now I know that the Lord will help his anointed; Give victory to the king, O Lord; ![]() Today's Devotional
“V-I-C-T-O-R-Y, that is our cry. Go Black Cats.” Over 50 years ago that call filled the sky around Black Cat Stadium in the small Texas town in which I grew up in so long ago.
King David is lifting his own cry for victory here in Psalm 20. He is calling for God’s help in bringing back to the King victory against his foes. 1 The Lord answer you in the day of trouble! The name of the God of Jacob protect you! 2 May he send you help from the sanctuary, and give you support from Zion. 3 May he remember all your offerings, and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices. Selah King David knew that days of trouble were coming. After all they always did. So, he reaches out to the ultimate source of help in those coming days and today. May God send you help and what better place from which that help to come than from the sanctuary and from Zion.: 2 May he send you help from the sanctuary, and give you support from Zion. What about you my dear sister or brother in Christ Jesus our Lord? In any conflict that may come upon you, wouldn’t you above all desire help from “Zion” the supreme source of help? 6 Now I know that the Lord will help his anointed; he will answer him from his holy heaven with mighty victories by his right hand. 7 Some take pride in chariots, and some in horses, but our pride is in the name of the Lord our God. 8 They will collapse and fall, but we shall rise and stand upright. No matter the conflict, we will stand tall with the help from our LORD in heaven. Trust in him for that strength you must have for the fulfillment of the glory of God on earth. Like on those Friday nights so long ago, this Psalm calls us to victory not from within our on strength up in the strength of God on high. Thanks be to the King of Zion. -Rev.
