Today's Lectionary Text

1 John 2:7-11

Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you have had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word that you have heard. Yet I am writing you a new commandment that is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. Whoever says, “I am in the light,” while hating a brother or sister, is still in the darkness. Whoever loves a brother or sister lives in the light, and in such a personthere is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates another believer is in the darkness, walks in the darkness, and does not know the way to go, because the darkness has brought on blindness.

Today's Devotional

The true light in our lives is Jesus Christ and what He has already done for us. He was with God in the beginning and will always continue. Asking Jesus to come into our lives is the most powerful thing that we could ever do. This invitation not only gives us everlasting life, but a spiritual strength and power that flows over to the physical world that cannot be measured in human terms.

But what about this darkness that John is referring to? It could be anything that separates us from God.  Whether it is hatred against a brother or sister or any kind of sin that Satin throws at us to keep us as far away from God as he can.

We must make a conscious effort to keep God’s word in our hearts and minds. Our actions motivated by the Holy Spirit that helps someone else will soon overpower the possible jealousy, mistrust or hatred of our brothers and sisters. The light of Christ shines. Let it shine in us!
