Today's Lectionary Text

John 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word
and the Word was with God
    and the Word was God.
The Word was with God in the beginning.
Everything came into being through the Word,
    and without the Word
    nothing came into being.
What came into being
    through the Word was life,
and the life was the light for all people.
The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness doesn’t extinguish the light.

Today's Devotional

The Prologue to the Gospel of John has long been my favorite of the three “Christmas stories” contained in the gospels. It is the last reading in the Service of Lessons and Carols for Christmas Eve or Christmas Day – and the reading I most often chose to read myself in that service. So why am I writing about a “Christmas text” for Labor Day?

I chose this text for today because I am writing on the day before I leave with others from Hutchinson Trinity UMC for a week-long Volunteers in Missions trip. For the next week, our labors will involve shining the light of the Word into the corners of our worksite.

Any time I read the words of this text I am reminded that Jesus is God’s gift to the world – from the very beginning of time. Any time we have the chance to share that gift with others it is a good thing. It makes us feel like we are doing something important for God.

But my previous experience of laboring on mission trips is that, more often, the people receiving my help are the ones shining the light of Christ into my world. As I learn about the people, their local culture, and their needs, I am reminded that we are all God’s children and that each of us has something to offer the world. As I offer Christ to others – whether at home or hundreds of miles away – I also receive Christ from others. Sometimes we are so focused on the work that we are doing for God that we forget to pay attention to the light and love with which God surrounds us each day.

I don’t know what awaits me at our mission work site in the week ahead, but I know that I will continue to learn and grow in faith as I interact with those among whom I live and work for this week. And on this Labor Day, I will be reflecting upon how the light of Christ has been shining in my world for the week past.

Prayer for Reflection

Light of the world, shine on me. Shine in this world. Help us all to remember that each of us bears the light of your love when we share Jesus with others. Amen.
