Today's Lectionary Text

Colossians 1:3-4

In our prayers for you we always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints,

Today's Devotional

As is typical of most of the letters attributed to Paul, the opening verses tell the church that he has heard of their faith and good works, and that he prays for them regularly.  Hopefully, the people of this faith community were greatly encouraged and affirmed knowing this! Paul did not start the church at Colossae, so he didn’t know them directly. But yet, they must have known who Paul was – they knew of him, even though they didn’t know him. I can imagine that they felt their spirits warmed, knowing that someone was praying for them, someone who didn’t even know them.

Do you let those you pray for know that you are praying? I have often let someone know I am praying for them, but I then to neglect the next step, which is so obvious in Paul’s letters -- the step of letting them know what I am praying for specifically. How much more powerful it is to know not only that someone is praying for you, but to know that they are praying for healing, for spiritual growth, for God to bless you this day, for growth in your knowledge of God’s will, for increase in wisdom.

Who are you praying for today? Who should you be praying for? Send them a message, letting them know how you are praying today.

Prayer for Reflection

God of grace, I thank you this day for all those who have prayed for me and who have been the spiritual giants in my life. Nudge me each day to pray for others whom I know, and those I don’t know but who also need your touch in their lives. May I be a blessing for someone else today through my prayers.
