Today's Lectionary Text

Psalm 91:9-16

Because you have made the Lord your refuge,
    the Most High your dwelling place,
no evil shall befall you,
    no scourge come near your tent.

For he will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways.
On their hands they will bear you up,
    so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.
You will tread on the lion and the adder,
    the young lion and the serpent you will trample under foot.

Those who love me, I will deliver;
    I will protect those who know my name.
When they call to me, I will answer them;
    I will be with them in trouble,
    I will rescue them and honor them.
With long life I will satisfy them,
    and show them my salvation.

Today's Devotional

In the dark moments of the soul, the bleak midwinter times of life, we hear these words and our reaction is more “Sure, God, I’ll believe it when I see it”, instead of faithfully believing and uttering the words, I believe, but help my unbelief. (Mark 9:24) Life has such a way of changing the play just as we are settling into a nice steady routine!

Our calmness changes into rants of “You said God that You would protect me, rescue me! You said you would answer me – so where are You, God?” “I don’t hear You, God!”

One of the challenges we face in this fix-it, fast-paced, drive-thru world we live in, is that we forget that God’s perfect timing can’t be set by our watch.  We can’t go through the nearest drive thru and pick out “our” answer, because it isn’t “our” answer that we really need. It’s God’s answer we are seeking.

When our belief becomes a faithful belief, then we are able once again to hear God’s voice, I’ll rescue you, I’ll protect you, I’ll answer.

Prayer for Reflection

Sustaining God help us to remember that all is unrevealed until its season, something You alone can see.  Amen.
