Today's Lectionary Text

Matthew 6:16

“And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.

Today's Devotional

The season of Lent is upon us and honestly, I love this time of year. My birthday is during this portion of this year, spring comes and the weather is not to hot but not too cold sometimes, the flowers and trees are beautiful, there are puddles to jump in because there is lots and lots of rain, and its Chaco season (which always makes me so happy). The downsides to this season are that we feel as if it should be warm but it’s not it’s cold, my allergies start acting up because everything is green and growing, it rains so darn much so it’s muddy, and in some cases the season of Lent.

Each year I contemplate whether or not I am going to give something up for Lent because I don’t want to, but I know that it will improve my relationship with God, I also struggle figuring out what I’m actually going to do.

This year I have decided to give up ice cream for the second year in a row and many of you might be thinking, “Really, ice cream? Why ice cream?” The reason being is that I love ice cream so much and it is ridiculous, and I eat way too much of it.

In these months that make up the season of Lent, I take my frustration of not being able to eat ice cream and my craving for it and direct it toward digging into the word of God.

So, as we all know this season can be quite the struggle, but it is well worth in the end for you to grow your relationship with God.
