Today's Lectionary Text
I love the Lord because he hears
The Lord is merciful and righteous;
What can I give back to the Lord
Oh yes, Lord, I am definitely your servant!
Praise the Lord!
I love the Lord because He hears my requests for mercy. (v.1) How many of us have found ourselves saying, “God, if you will just do this or that, I promise I will never do it (whatever) again.” “God, I promise You I will never miss church again if You will just take care of this one thing, please?” It would probably be scary if we kept a total for just one week for how many times, we have thought it or said it. In our passage for today, the Psalmist recalls times of affliction and trouble, while affirming God’s grace, compassion and care.
God is so merciful and compassionate to us. I do not know any humans that have His patience and unconditional love. I like to think I am pretty patient, yet when the same question, conversation or misstep comes at me over and over and over, I truly find myself just wanting to walk away. I remember as a college student (on the beautiful plains with the sun-kissed sky), my daddy saying to me, “how many times do I have to tell you?” Let us just say I enjoyed my undergrad days at Auburn University on top of some learning disabilities that were not diagnosed until I was in my 30s. My ADHD has pushed me to develop more patience and understanding, even though I can still find my limit.
As I was meditating on this passage, I had a light-bulb moment when I thought back to all my college years. I heard those words from my daddy again, yet it was such a comfort to have never heard words like that from God. I was reminded that God always keeps His promises to me. I watched the sun set, pondering vs. 14 I’ll keep the promises I made to the Lord in the presence of all God’s people.

Prayer for Reflection
Thank you God for never saying “how many times have I told you?” Forgive us for the times we have failed You, for the times our patience has run out. Empower us to be people of compassion and care all the days of our lives. Amen.
