Today's Lectionary Text

Philippians 2:5

Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,

Today's Devotional

My most real danger is that I have come to enjoy being hunkered down in order to stay safe from exposure to the virus. This is coming from a guy that debarked the Princess cruise ship that was quarantined for the virus just eight days earlier. We enjoy traveling. This is from the guy that has lived high in the mountains of Colorado the entire summer for a lot of years. This is from the guy that still gets preaching appointments, helps at funerals, and might be found making a hospital call for the local church that he attends.

Oh, it would be convenient to once again wake up to 35-degree weather in July, and not have any grass to mow. This thing about mowing part of the lawn before breakfast is not my favorite new thing. The wonderful new thing about this is that I am happy. I have included the word “gratitude” in my prayers more often in the last few months than ever before. Give me a jigsaw puzzle, a book, a game of bridge on the computer, and a Hallmark movie, and I cannot think of a way to have a better day.

The Apostle Paul has given us the core spiritual principle, “The attitude you should have is the one that Christ Jesus had:” (Philippians 2:5) It is hard to be grumpy and grateful at the same time.

Prayer for Reflection

We pray, O Lord, teach us to focus on the best parts of life, and to know the joy that you have promised us in the harvest of the spirit as we gratefully follow in the way of life Jesus gives us. Amen.
