Today's Lectionary Text

Today's Devotional

I was hurriedly walking the dogs to beat the rain.  I said Hi to my neighbor Jane, “I’m in a hurry to beat the rain.” Four more houses down — we did not beat the downpour — we ran back toward home and ducked into the car port at Fergusens. We three were soaked. Here comes Jane in her pickup to rescue us and take us home. “Thanks, but we are keeping social distance, I’ll call Joyce.” While we were waiting, Laurie Ferguson came out. “I’ll take you home.” “No thanks, we are keeping social distance, and Joyce will be here in a minute.”

I kept my distance from two wonderful neighbors, and I feel guilty and sad.  How do we do a better Christian job of being a good “love your neighbor” person while being safe? In first John 4: 7-8 we are taught, “Dear friends, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Whoever loves is a child of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God for God is love.”

We must not let the virus put a mask over our love of neighbor or we will lose something that no vaccination can give back to us.  What we may have taken for granted in an easier time we need to take extraordinary steps to keep alive and well right now. My neighbors have been better at this than I have.

Prayer for Reflection

O Lord, you have defined life for us as love of neighbor, now help us put that way of life into action in each and everything that we do in Jesus name, Amen.
