Today's Lectionary TextLuke 18:15-17People were bringing babies to Jesus so that he would bless them. When the disciples saw this, they scolded them. Then Jesus called them to him and said, “Allow the children to come to me. Don’t forbid them, because God’s kingdom belongs to people like these children. I assure you that whoever doesn’t welcome God’s kingdom like a child will never enter it.”![]() Today's Devotional
August always makes me think of the back-to-school season; going with my mom to pick out colorful folders and notebooks, starting off the school year with a renewed spirit. Even after I graduated, I still love to buy new pens and notebooks every August. However, at the start of this school year, things feel different.
There is less excitement, as uncertainty and fear consume our world. Students, teachers, and parents do not know how school will look for them, and we grieve the sense of normalcy of the school season. At this time we all need the reminder that Jesus welcomes us no matter the challenges or frustrations, Jesus welcomes us into the family of God. I want to speak to all the children and students who are navigating this world. Right now, things are challenging and scary. It is okay to feel upset and sad. I feel sad too. I miss my friends. But I know there are so many people who care for me, and who care for you. Your parents, teachers, pastors, church members, all love you so much. No matter what is going on, they will love you just as Jesus loves you. Jesus is right there with you holding you in his arms. And for the rest of us, let us continue to welcome the children into the church community. To show them the open arms and love Jesus welcomes us all with. For when we were tiny babies, God welcomed us into this glorious family claiming us as true Children of God. For we are the family of God, and together as we welcome all, we reflect the divine kin-dom. Let us continue to be a family of love and welcome. Prayer for ReflectionFather, Mother, Parent God: As Children you welcomed us into your family and blessed us. In these unusual times for children, let us find ways to show them the same love and compassion, receiving them with open arms. Amen.
