Today's Lectionary Text

Mark 10:42-45

So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

Today's Devotional

In this scripture, Jesus is making his way to Jerusalem with His 12 Disciples. People wanted to hang on to him longer but the Disciples, being overly protective…were shoving them back. They seemed a l-i-t-t-l-e bit cranky, so Jesus had to straighten them out. He tried to tell them (not once, not twice, but three times) that His mission was to fulfill the scriptures, that His day was coming for to leave them; and theirs was to serve others in His name. His Disciples had their heads in the clouds, and they kept missing the point. This wasn’t about them but what they could do for Him.

Indulge me for a minute with a reality check: think about the last time you served someone without considering your own needs. Hopefully you don’t have to think too long and hard for this. Do you remember how you felt? Didn’t it feel good? Did it make you feel close to God -- like he had spoken to your heart? That’s what I’m talking about. Ask Him for ways to minister to the needs of others -- when you open up to the opportunities, God will drop one in your lap.

Prayer for Reflection

Dear Lord, you do too much for us…what can we do for you. Make our hearts flexible so that when Your request comes, we open to You. Make Your will our will. May we clearly receive the call to serve others for Jesus sake. Amen
