Today's Lectionary Text

James 2:14-17,14

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

Today's Devotional

Hello! My name is Jaylie Postlewait, I am a Junior Communication Major here at Emporia State University. My perfect day would consist of going to a coffee shop with some friends and hanging out. I love hiking and the mountains, Colorado is one of my favorite places to be. After college, I am not exactly sure what I am going to be doing but as long as I am working with people and find ways to give back to my community, I’ll be okay.

James 2:14-17 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

Faith without works is something that is constantly on my mind. If someone claims to have faith, but has no works then their faith is not living, it is dead. The works that you do are a valid demonstration of the faith that you have. If you know what someone needs or what someone is doing wrong and all you do is throw biblical verses at them, what good is that? (verse 16). It is not enough. Your faith is not demonstrated only by how well you know the bible but of your works as well. Prayer is not a substitute for your actions, go out into the world and show people your faith through your good works. Adam Clarke, a Methodist commentator, once said “our pretending to have faith, while you have no works of charity or mercy, is utterly vain: for as faith, which is a principle in the mind, cannot be discerned but by the effects, that is, good works; he who has no good works has, presumptively, no faith”.

Prayer for Reflection

Hey God, I ask that you give everyone the strength to get through whatever they may be going through. Watch over the hurt, the sick, the happy, and the broken. Give us opportunities to go out into the world to show others You and all of the wonderful things that you have for them.
