Today's Lectionary Text

Romans 13:11-12a

Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near.

Today's Devotional

The season of Advent brings us scriptures that reference waking and sleeping and the dire consequences of confusing the two. The passage of time carries an urgency in this season of faith development as we are urged to stay alert and to be ready to not just witness God’s presence in the world around us but to participate as witnesses and storytellers to the truth that God is alive and at work in our very midst.
This notion of time extends far beyond watches and programmable coffeemakers into our very essence; God’s time permeates the stories of Advent and calls us to be alert to our faith journey not just at a specific hour of the day but in a pervasive, continual, life-encompassing way of being. The scriptures serve as our wake-up call; there is no snooze setting for the prophets and Gospel writers in this season.
What time is it? It’s time to recall God’s claim on our lives as disciples. It’s time to ask ourselves what spiritual exercises we might undertake to ready ourselves for the next steps on our journey. It’s time to be alert to God’s presence in the world around us. It’s time to share the stories of how we have come to find ourselves as a forgiven and beloved people. It’s time to seek justice and undertake acts of mercy. It’s time to say yes to our baptismal vows and keep watch for God’s creative energy in the world.
