Today's Lectionary Text

Psalm 150

Praise the Lord!
Praise God in his sanctuary;
    praise him in his mighty firmament!
Praise him for his mighty deeds;
    praise him according to his surpassing greatness!

Praise him with trumpet sound;
    praise him with lute and harp!
Praise him with tambourine and dance;
    praise him with strings and pipe!
Praise him with clanging cymbals;
    praise him with loud clashing cymbals!
Let everything that breathes praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord!

Today's Devotional

I love reading the Psalms because they invoke such a love of God. “Praise God in God’s sanctuary, Praise God in God’s fortress, the sky!” There is such incredible love for God’s creation.

I know for myself; worship often did not include loud clashing of cymbals. It was often quiet stillness. Which there is nothing wrong with quiet, but I think sometimes we need the loud clashing, the drums and the dance, the lute and lyre.

We need the reminder of God’s goodness. For me, I was always so afraid to make a peep in church, to laugh or to cry, to shout or sing. But there is no “right” way to sing praises. As the psalmist shows, it is all about showing authentic and true praise to God.

So, if you feel called to dance and sing: dance and sing! If you want to praise God through silent prayer: pray! However, you praise the LORD is the right way. And so, I am going to shout my praises and remember the mighty acts of God! I won’t be singing, but I will be praying and enjoying God’s beautiful creation. May we all praise God in our own wonderful ways.
