Today's Lectionary Text

Psalm 1:1-3

Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
    whatever they do prospers.

Today's Devotional

I love the wide open prairies of Kansas and Nebraska. I can imagine the early settlers of this land traveling for days and days across the broad open landscape. I can feel their joy at seeing lines of cottonwood trees that lined the rivers and streams, showing them where water could be found.

I’ve always thought people are a lot like trees. When we are young, we bend easily in the wind, searching out our own path. Often we sway from one influence to another. As we grow older, we grow more solid in our beliefs, yet still feel the pull of the opinions of friends, media, and societal expectation. When we are old, deep roots can help us deal with the changes that aging brings.

A tree whose roots can no longer reach life giving water will die. It will no longer be limber enough to withstand the storms and will break under the strain. Like a tree, we must stay connected to the life giving water of our God if we are to withstand the storms of life. When we reach down deep and anchor our roots in our faith- when we keep our hearts and minds open to new possibilities-we are able to be sustained through life’s trials and tribulations; to bend and not break.

Prayer for Reflection

Sustaining God, help us remain grounded in your love so that we can not only withstand the storms life sends us, but also be a place of shelter for those caught in the storms of life. Amen.
