Today's Lectionary Text

James 1:16-18

Do not be deceived, my beloved.

Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. In fulfillment of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures.

Today's Devotional

A lovely surprise arrived with the mail carrier this morning. A gift! Just a small box stuffed with a few items that made me smile as I pulled each from the box. A gift from the District Superintendent to say “thanks” to ALL the clergy of the district (yes, even the retired clergy!) for continuing to respond to the call of God in our lives over this past year that has held so many difficulties.
I think most of us enjoy receiving gifts – not to mention words of appreciation. I know that I do! But gifts from others are not common in my life these days, unless it is Christmas or my birthday, so the little box full of reminders of the goodness of God was very welcome.
And, because any time some piece of music I know fits a situation, the song “All Good Gifts” from “Godspellbegan to roll through my mind – and has been my earworm all day!
We plow the fields and scatter the good seed on the land
But it is fed and watered by God's almighty hand
He sends us snow in winter, the warmth to swell the grain
The breezes and the sunshine and soft refreshing rain
All good gifts around us, are sent from Heaven above
So thank the Lord, oh, thank the Lord for all His love
We thank Thee then, O Father, for all things bright and good
The seed time and the harvest, our life, our health, our food
No gifts have we to offer for all Thy love imparts
But that which Thou desirest, our humble thankful hearts
All good gifts around us, are sent from Heaven above
So thank the Lord, oh, thank the Lord for all His love
I really wanna thank You Lord
(“All Good Gifts”-Godspell by Stephen Schwarts and John-Mihael Tebelak)
That song actually quotes an old hymn that was included in The Methodist Hymnal (1966), #513. The tune from Godspell, though, is what has run through my mind all day – along with the words from James in the quoted Scripture.
All good and perfect gifts do, indeed, come from God and, while physical gifts may not be frequent in my life these days, I am reminded that the beautiful spring sunshine, rain for the fields, flowering plants, and, yes, encouraging words from others, are “good and perfect” gifts from God. Perhaps especially so after more than a year of pandemic, ugly words, and loneliness for so many. And I must ask myself if I have failed to see those good gifts that come my way each day from the hand of my loving God who sent Jesus to show us the way to new life.

Prayer for Reflection

Holy God, giver of every good and perfect gift, help us to recognize those gifts you send to us each day and share those gifts with those around us. Amen.
