Today's Lectionary TextProverbs 16: 1Mortals make elaborate plans, but God has the last word. ![]() Today's Devotional
I will confess I am a planner and sometimes, those plans just don’t work out. I was planning beautiful and special music for Christmas one year, only to spend Christmas Sunday morning in the hospital with my young child. We were planning on a family reunion in Colorado when COVID cancelled all our plans --two years in a row. I had plans to help with confirmation and go back east for my brother and sister-in-law's 50th wedding anniversary, only to have those plans put in jeopardy by a health issue of my husband’s. I don’t like it when my plans have to be changed, but I have come to accept that God may have other plans for me.
One of my girls’ favorite games growing up was a simple computer game with Barbie and Ken. Ken would invite Barbie to do something, and she would get all dressed for it and then Ken would call, “Hi Barbie, this is Ken, plans have changed.” And Barbie would have to change clothes for the new plan. Then the call would come again, “Hi Barbie, this is Ken, Plans have changed.” So here I am again -- only it’s God instead of Ken saying, “plans have changed.” I’m familiar with the roller coaster now and mature enough to understand that sometimes things just don’t go the way we planned. Prayer for ReflectionOmnipotent God, I know you have plans for me that I don’t understand. Help me be faithful and patient when my plans and yours don’t go together, for I know your plans are far better than my plans. Help me be ready when you call and say “Hi Mary. This is God. Plans have changed!” In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
