Today's Lectionary Text

Galatians 5:22-23

By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things.

Today's Devotional

The fruit of the spirit is such a fun and beautiful metaphor describing attributes of faith. I can remember going to Sunday school and learning about the fruits of the spirit, specifically the fruit of the spirit song, and it was the best lesson we had done yet. One “fruit” that I think is especially applicable to today’s world is Patience.

What exactly is patience? As Christians, I think patience is the quality of waiting for God’s timing on things, without complaint. The Bible gives us loads of examples of great acts of patience. Joseph being in prison before Pharaoh’s dreams happen, Abram and Sarah waiting for a child, the ENTIRE book of Job. All of these acts took great patience. However, a trend to note is the great reward after each of these trials. Joseph became the second most powerful person in Egypt and effectively saved his whole family. Abram and Sarah gave birth to Isaac. Job’s entire life was restored and then some. These characters faced great trials, showed great patience, and in turn, received a great reward.

More than anything, being patient, along with actively pursuing the other fruits of the spirit, will bring you closer to God and Godliness. Isn’t that what being a Christian is all about? This season, look for ways to be more patient, and then do them!
