Today's Lectionary Text

Proverbs 3:13-18

Blessed are those who find wisdom,
    those who gain understanding,
for she is more profitable than silver
    and yields better returns than gold.
She is more precious than rubies;
    nothing you desire can compare with her.
Long life is in her right hand;
    in her left hand are riches and honor.
Her ways are pleasant ways,
    and all her paths are peace.
She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her;
    those who hold her fast will be blessed.

Today's Devotional

This scripture speaks about the importance of gaining wisdom and understanding. As a young person (especially as a teenager), wisdom is something that I’m definitely chasing as I grow older.

“Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding.”

I interpret this as King Solomon telling us that when we search for wisdom, we gain understanding, thus making us happy or blessed.

“For she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Length of day is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honor.”

When we gain wisdom and understanding, we reach a whole new level of self-awareness and confidence that can’t be tampered with. For many, self-worth comes from outside approval, but this reminds us that having inner wisdom is what makes us untouchable.

“Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.”

All those who are guided by wisdom will walk securely without anxiety about where they’re going or where their path will take them.

“She is a tree of life to them that take hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed.”

To be a tree of life means to exude positivity, abundance, and strength. A wise person is a force to be reckoned with. They radiate an energy and happiness that touches others. This happiness not only affects them but spreads to those around them. To even be in their presence is a blessing.

When we search for wisdom and understanding, we change our lives as well as the lives of those around us. There is no limit to how much wisdom and understanding one can hold, but it’s better to long for it than to comfortably sit in ignorance. Being wise and humble inevitably brings good energy into the world. How will you use your wisdom to bring positivity to those around you?

Prayer for Reflection

Heavenly Father, I pray that I may find wisdom and understanding to bring peace into my life. May I touch the lives of others and discover happiness within myself. Grant me the wherewithal to understand that I do not and will never know everything, but that in you I find serenity. Amen.
