Today's Lectionary Text

Jeremiah 29:10 - 14

For thus says the Lord: Only when Babylon’s seventy years are completed will I visit you, and I will fulfill to you my promise and bring you back to this place. For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek me with all your heart, I will let you find me, says the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, says the Lord, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.

Today's Devotional

Today is our 20th wedding anniversary. When I met Beth through Love@Aol (one of the first online dating sites), I never imagined that that title “Christian Woman Seeking Christian Man” would have such a lasting impact. Not only did she bring me back to the UMC but I have gained a whole new family through her sisters and brother. Beth has stood by my side as I have completed my undergraduate degree, just over 20 years after I started it, she has encouraged me, loved me, and lived life with me. When the call into full-time ministry was laid upon my heart it was through discernment, prayer, and conversation with my wife that I followed that call.

The well-known verse Jeremiah 29:11 became a staple for the discernment journey and the start of seminary and beyond. While this scripture was addressing the exiled people in Babylon it still has legs today. It reminds us that just like Jeremiah told the people of Israel, God still speaks to us today. Reminding us that we are in relationship together and the divine will continue to walk with us through life’s journeys.

Here we are 20 years later celebrating our anniversary, Beth starting a new full-time job, and continuing to be in ministry in Reno and Rice counties as we serve Mitchell Chapel and Little River First. When we went out on our first date in June 2000 I don’t think either one of us ever imagined the roller coaster ride we were starting. Through all the good, the bad, the sad God has been with us. I encourage you to once again read the scripture above and remember that our God loves us and walks alongside us through all the challenges that we face in life.

Prayer for Reflection

Loving God, may we always remember that you are with us no matter what is happening in life. In our celebrations, in our frustrations, in our love you care for us and guide us to continue to build your kindom in this world. May we share your love to all those we encounter. In Jesus’ holy name we pray. Amen
