Today's Lectionary Text

Luke 10:27

He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”

Today's Devotional

The other day I went to pick up a new order of medicine at the base exchange pharmacy. The process is more complicated at a military pharmacy than at a civilian one. I always think about the steps I must take in order to get my medicine and stay calm.

This day I noticed that the clerk who served me was also challenged to get through all of her own steps correctly. A new thought occurred to me, “What do I need to do to help her do her work quickly?” I stood erect and put a pleasant expression on my face. I thought “She knows what she’s doing. She can get through this process.” I took deep breaths.

In a few minutes she completed her job and told me when to pick up my medicine. She ended our encounter by paying me with these words, “Thank you for your patience.”

I regularly do my best to follow the Golden Rule. I know how I want to be treated, but to give deliberate thought to what another may need was a new experience for me. I left feeling calm and confident. Thank you God for the gift that was that exchange.
