Today's Lectionary Text

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not rely on your own insight.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.

Today's Devotional

When I went through confirmation class, we were required to do memory work.  We had to memorize the books of the Bible, Psalm 23, Apostle’s Creed, 10 Commandments, and Lord’s Prayer.  We were also invited to memorize an additional scripture passage of our choosing.  Somehow, I was led to Proverbs 3:5-6.

This passage has remained in my head for almost 50 years now.  I bring it out of storage when I’m forgetful that God is with me and when I need to place my complete trust in God.  Too much of the time I rely only on myself – “I can do it, I can figure it out, I don’t need any help.”  The reality is that I do need help, God’s help.  I believe that if I trust in God, and listen to God, my journey and path will be made known.

Prayer for Reflection

Loving and gracious God, help us to acknowledge you and place our complete trust in you.  In times of joy and sorrow, help us to believe that we are never alone.  You are always with us and will make a path known to us as we journey through life.  Amen.
