Today's Lectionary Text

Psalm 29

Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,
    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name;
    worship the Lord in holy splendor.

The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
    the God of glory thunders,
    the Lord, over mighty waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
    the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
    the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
    and Sirion like a young wild ox.

The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
    the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl,
    and strips the forest bare;
    and in his temple all say, “Glory!”

The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
    the Lord sits enthroned as king forever.
May the Lord give strength to his people!
    May the Lord bless his people with peace!

Today's Devotional

It seems this psalm may have been written during a thunderstorm. In Kansas we get some pretty tremendous thunderstorms. They can be very majestic as well as destructive. David is experiencing one of those thunderstorms where it is almost too wonderful to not look at but after is passes the destruction is not so wonderful to look at.
Three times David says to give. Is there anything that we can give to God? He does not need our sacrifices. He does not need our food or our clothing. David tells us one thing that we can give God and that is glory to His name, this glory is due to his name. We can also worship the Lord. David then describes for us the voice of the Lord using the sound of thunder.
In a Kansas thunderstorm there are two types of thunder. There is the rolling thunder and then there is the crack of thunder. The rolling thunder just comes and goes, and it is not very troubling. Then the crack of thunder comes rather unexpected and gets your attention. It causes things to shake.
Along with the thunder is the lightning. Really the lightning comes before the thunder. Lightning strikes can cause trees to break. They can set the woods on fire. Even the animals can get frightened and if any are pregnant, they might give birth. The lightning flashed and it almost seems light in the dark storm. David describes these events in verses 3-10.
David ends the Psalm with a reminder that no matter what we might go through or how devasting times may get the Lord is always with His people. “The Lord will give strength unto his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace.”

Prayer for Reflection

Lord, may we always continue to give You the glory due Your name.  May we always remember that no matter how bad the storms of life may be, You will always be there for us and give us strength and You will bless us with peace. Amen.
