Today's Lectionary Text

Zephaniah 3:17

“The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.”

Today's Devotional

Growing up, attending church camp was one of my favorite weeks of the summer. When I was younger I was enthralled with the multi-part harmony that became a part of the fabric of my faith experience later on. Sitting around the campfire reflecting on our days, fighting the urge to fall asleep, singing about how much God cares for all of his children. This was where I first heard Zephaniah 3:17. “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.”

It was a beautiful sentiment as a fourth-grader, but it would take me many years to fully understand the beauty and the impact of this verse. How amazing is it that God rejoices over us, even with all his other children in the world, he cares for us each individually? There have been a few times in my life where I have felt like God was far away, but I came back to this verse and was reminded that God has always and will always be there, through all the hills and valleys of life. During Lent, I like to focus on adding an activity or practice to bring me closer to God, rather than omitting something for the same effect. In this practice, I find that Zephaniah 3:17 is a verse I continue to go back to refocus myself. In this crazy world we all need a way to bring God back into focus, my challenge for you this Lenten season is whenever you need a reminder that God is always there repeat these words of Zeph 3:17:

The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save; he will take great joy in you; he will quiet you with his love; he will rejoice over you with singing.

Peace be with you.
