We had the opportunity to move the family to Spain when our children were younger. The experience was life-changing on many levels. For me, our stay proved, without a shadow of a doubt, that we all need to see God through the innocence of a child’s eye.
We were lucky and lived 200 meters from the Mediterranean Sea. We could sit out on our balcony and watch the waves crash on the beach and the ships sail across the horizon. Early on, we noticed our 5-year-old was constantly telling us things that a young child should not know like, “did you know that there are three levels in the sea?” He would then go on and tell us the type of sea life that lived in each part of the sea from the plankton to the small fish to the clams and sharks. He also told us how mountains were born. He would go into old churches, get very quiet and just listen and look at everything. This was unusual for a rambunctious boy! When we asked him how he knew these things, he would say, “God told me.” That became his standard answer on all of the scientific, philosophical and faith-based answers, “God told me.” When we moved back to America, all of those interesting facts just stopped. About a month after we moved home, I finally asked him, “while we lived in Spain you used to tell us all of these amazing things and now you have stopped. Why?” He looked at me and said, “Mom, God would talk to me through the wind and the waves.” May we be like children, listen for God’s voice and know that God wants to have a relationship with us; wants the best for us and wants us to know the plan for our lives.
