Today's Lectionary Text

2 Corinthians 8:21

We intend to do what is right not only in the Lord's sight but also in the sight of others.

Today's Devotional

The Daily Texts is a tool used by many folks around the world -- for almost 300 years! One of the texts for today is 2 Corinthians 8:21. This comes in the middle of Paul encouraging the Corinthians to be generous in giving for the sake of the larger church and he is speaking of himself as he administers this “stewardship drive” and distribution. Paul is sincere in wanting to do what God asks of him; and at the same time, he wants to be sure that there is no room for complaint in his actions. It doesn't sound like a “war” but isn't it often a bit of a battle to discern.

God’s call and our will. Generally, right with God is also right in the sight of others; but sometimes we are called to be prophetic and not everyone wants to hear the truth or be called to account for their actions. Sometimes, we believe so strongly that we are right that we fool ourselves that our will is God's will. Good intentions are not enough. Personal prayer and discernment, in concert with the community of faith's prayer, discernment and study, lead us to right action for God's glory and the good of God's beloved.
