Licensing school is an intensive course designed to prepare lay people called to serve in pastoral ministry. It fulfills the requirements of the Book of Discipline after completion of which participants can be appointed to serve in local churches as licensed local pastors. Before registraion, a student must (1) be certified as a candidate and approved for licnese as a local pastor by their District Committee on Ordained Ministry or (2) be serving as a District Superintendent Assignment (DSA) and completing the certified candidate credentialing track. Licensing school focuses especially on the pastoral behaviors, practices and theological framework necessary to enable lay people to transition to a clergy role and to thrive as pastoral leaders under appointment in the the United Methodist Church. The Great Plains Licensing School is two weeks; both Week 1 and Week 2 must be completed in the same year to meet the Book of Discipline requirement and be eligible for license. Registration is through the Great Plains website. Registration dates are approximately mid-February to mid-May. In 2018, Week 1 will take place at the Leadership Center, Aurora, NE. Week 2, July 23-27, will take place at the Heartland Center for Spirituality, Great Bend, KS. Deans for the 2018 school are Mary Scott and Kathy Symes.
