While reading an article recently by Glenn Wagner (What would Wesley say to us today?, UMMEN Magazine) he pointed out, “John Wesley would remind United Methodists of the central importance of our personal decision to “live with a single eye.” Wesley began this practice during his days at Oxford University when he, with a small group of like-minded Christian believers, sought to order his life after the example of Jesus so that every aspect of his living was focused on giving glory and honor to God.” While 2020 and the first days of 2021 have presented so many diversions, we may find ourselves having difficulty “living with a single eye”.
The Methodist Class Meeting resource is being offered by the Congregational Excellence Team. Currently there are three models for houses of worship to utilize:
  • Network Model – under the leadership of the District Superintendent and a Network Class Leader, houses of worships who can no longer support paid clergy, can continue to meet in the facility under the leadership of a lay class leader.
  • Fresh Expressions Model A – under the leadership of the District Superintendent and either a Network Class Leader or Conference Staff person.  These class meeting groups are held in other locations and not the house of worship facility.  Leadership is a lay class leader.
  • Fresh Expressions Model B – under the leadership of the program ministries of a local house of worship, these class meetings are held in locations other than the house of worship facility. Leadership is a lay class leader.
  • Discipleship Model – under the leadership of the program ministries of a local house of worship, these class meetings can be held in or outside of the facility. Leadership is a lay class leader.
The purpose is for small groups of individuals to “watch over one another in love”. This act of mutual accountability is for the building and sustaining intentional discipleship.
The next Zoom informational sessions will be held on January 23, 10am – 12pm and February 15, 6pm – 8pm.  You may register for either January 23 (on this page) or February 15 (view event here).
