Wrapped in prayer! That is exactly what the Prayer Shawl Ministry is all about at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus.

This new ministry was launched on Jan. 18 and currently has 23 people involved, including two Hispanic women and their three children. Since the women attend our ESL classes, participating in this new ministry gives them an opportunity to hear English and to practice their skills in a non-threatening environment. They have felt so cared for as church members teach them how to knit, crochet or use looms to create the shawls. They are also learning how The United Methodist Church reaches out to people who need comfort when suffering from an illness, going through a personal struggle or welcoming a new baby. Our members range in age from 9 to 90-years old! This is a spiritual practice and the hope is that the recipients of the shawls will feel the love and the prayer that was stitched into them.
