An automotive ministry called SPEED was launched in September at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus. There are 15 men in this group who like to work on cars and trucks and who want to use their mechanical gifts to serve others. SPEED stands for “Serving People Enthusiastically Every Day.”

A fall Car Care Clinic was held last fall; people had an opportunity to have the fluid levels, wiper blades, tire pressure, lights, battery, belts and hoses checked so they would be prepared for the coming winter.

After each car was checked, people were told what they needed to buy. They bought what was needed and brought back the part to have it installed by the church mechanics. Five belts, three batteries, a door handle and numerous wiper blades were replaced. Several bad tires were also repaired. During that three hour session, 22 cars were serviced! God’s ministry in action was clearly experienced!

The group now meets every other week and continues to work on vehicles to help people save money and be safe. The latest addition to this ministry includes Hispanic/Latino people from our ESL classes. Three men needed help to install an alternator, a pump and an air conditioner. They were amazed to know that church members wanted to help them. In reaching out to our newest neighbors, these mechanics become Christ’s love in action!
