Arthur Swarthout

Rev. Arthur Wellington Swarthout, 89; retired Great Plains Conference pastor. Born May 23, 1933; died February 9, 2023.

He married Elizabeth (Betty) Lindsay Swarthout, a deaconess and diaconal minister in The United Methodist Church, on Aug. 23, 1957. She survives, as do his children, Mark W. Swarthout (Cathy), Dr. Mary B. Swarthout and Sarah J. Swarthout Howard (Thom); and twin granddaughters.

After graduating from West Virginia Wesleyan College, Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary and the University of Maryland School of Library and Informational Science, he was ordained as a deacon (1955) and an elder (1959) in the Central New York Conference. 

In 67 years of ministry, he served Central New York, Pittsburgh, Baltimore-Washington, West Virginia and Nebraska conferences. In the former Nebraska Conference, he served churches in Logan Center-Laurel, O'Neill, Gordon, Wahoo and Broken Bow, as well as the Commission on Archives and History, before his retirement in 1997.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Monday, March 13, 2023, in the chapel at Brooks-Howell Retirement Home, 266 Merrimon Avenue, Asheville, North Carolina.
