Bishop Scott J. Jones has issued a statement to all clergy and lay members of the Great Plains Conference regarding Petition 7. This legislation, titled "Acknowledgment of Diverse Beliefs Regarding Homosexuality," passed during the Great Plains Annual Conference session Saturday, June 13, in Wichita, Kansas.
The letter explains that the vote changes nothing about how the church operates today and that the vote moves the petition to The United Methodist Church's General Conference in May 2016 for consideration by the delegates from across the United States and around the world. The letter also explains what clergy members can do and cannot do regarding same-sex marriage ceremonies under the Book of Discipline, and the bishop reiterates that we are called to love and respect one another in this debate and in all matters.
