On Nov. 20, 16 members of the new G3 (God’s Good Gang) Youth Group from Burdett and Rozel had a party to fill shoeboxes with small gifts for Operation Christmas Child.

Pastor Brad McCoy and his wife, Jolene, are the group leaders, and they had asked members from the United Methodist church in each town for donations to purchase items for the boxes. Jolene also asked the youth to bring items to fill the boxes.

“The response from the church members was huge, and the youth brought quite a lot of things to fill the boxes,” Jolene said.

She had purchased enough items to fill 14 boxes, but they actually managed to fill 22 boxes.

“I tried to instill in them that this shoe box that they're putting together will probably be the only gift this child will get for Christmas,” she said. “We tried to make a lesson out of the project.”

Each box also included a handmade greeting card signed by all the group members and a picture of the group.

“The youth were excited that they had a hand in making 22 children a little happier this Christmas season. It was the group’s first mission project,” Jolene said.
